HEALTH AND FITNESS - FIRST AID
First Aid at Work (First Aider)
A First Aider is a person who has been trained by, and holds a current certificate of an organisation whose training and qualifications are approved by the Health and Safety Executive.
First Aiders are trained to deal with the majority of emergency situations that can occur in the workplace, but may require extra training if special conditions exist at work, (e.g. use of breathing equipment if they might have to enter a dangerous atmosphere to administer first aid).
First Aid certificates issued by such organisations are valid for 3 years and the First Aider must re-qualify before the certificate expires.
Training courses for a First Aid at Work qualification are 18 hours (3 days) in duration. Re-qualification courses are 2 days in duration, but must be taken before the first aid certificate expires or the candidate has to attend a full 3 day course and cover:
Managing emergencies,
Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
Shock and circulatory disorders,
Bleeding,
Broken bones,
Burns & scalds,
Temperature related injuries,
Crush injuries,
Convulsions,
Medical emergencies,
Poisoning,
Epilepsy & asthma,
Foreign object intrusion,
First aid kits and equipment,
Record keeping.
Emergency First Aider at Work (EFAW)
An 'Emergency First Aider' is trained for 6 hours. This is the most basic level of first aider in the workplace. The main areas of the syllabus concentrates on basic life saving skills. EFAW training covers the following topics:
Acting safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Treating an unconscious casualty (including seizure)
Chocking
Wounds and bleeding
Shock
Minor injuries
Cross infection, recording incidents and actions and the use of available equipment
Assessment,
Paediatric First Aid
This course teaches CPR and First Aid Skills for the care of infants and children. The training has an emphasis on prevention strategies and is suitable for teachers, classroom assistants, childcare staff, parents, grandparents, babysitters, and anyone working with children and young people.
This programme is accredited by LTAS and meets the Health & Safety Executive recommendations for Appointed Persons in the Workplace.
The Paediatric First Aid Course will cover the following in two days training:
Initial Assessment,
C.P.R (Infant, Child, Adult),
Rescue Breathing (Infant, Child, Adult),
Control of bleeding,
Choking Management,
Continuing Circle of Care,
Shock,
Respiratory Problems,
Meningitis,
And much more.
First Aid at Home
Would you know what to do if a loved one, neighbour or friend needed your help in a first aid situation? This short course can be tailored towards your individual needs, and will teach you the basic skills of first aid. We would usually cover the following during a two-hour session:
Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – adults, child and infant,
Control of bleeding,
Shock,
Broken bones,
Burns,
Medical emergencies,
Choking,
And anything else you would like included.

Citizenship in community first aid is aimed at providing young people, in full time education, with the important life skills to make a real difference between life and death. Whether participating in school activities, sport, at home with the family, or out and about in the community. Preserving life, preventing someone's condition from deteriorating and promoting their recovery, are all positive hallmarks of a caring citizen. In addition the programme will aim to nurture those important emotions and skills which create respect, support and concern for human life. These cut across everything we do in our daily lives.
Hogg’s Fitness & First Aid have developed an initiative that will give young people a positive education in first aid across three key stages of the National Curriculum. The programme will enable pupils to progress from Foundation, through Intermediate and onto higher certificated levels of competence in first aid.
FOUNDATION LEVEL - KEY STAGE 2 (9 -11 Years of age)
This is aimed at young people within Key Stage 2 of their educational development. The syllabus of knowledge and skills reflects the age and ability of the young person and the realistic role and responsibility that they could be expected to undertake in providing first aid as a supportive citizen.
Aim: The course will introduce the pupil to their role and responsibilities at a Foundation level and include personal safety, seeking adult assistance, calling the emergency services and giving basic treatment.
Objective: At the end of the course pupils will be able to take positive action by considering their persona! safety, seeking adult help, calling the emergency services and giving basic treatment.
Course content:-
Being a good citizen in school, at sport, at home and in your community
Assessing and considering personal safety and the environment
Providing casualty care.
Checking levels of response and seeking adult assistance
Recognition of life threatening conditions (DRAB)
Calling the Ambulance service by telephone
CPR and caring for the unconscious casualty
Dealing with wounds and bleeding
Course duration: 3 hours
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL - KEY STAGE 3 (12 -13 Years of age)
This is aimed at young people within Key Stage 3 of their educational development. The syllabus of knowledge and skills reflects the age and ability of the young person and the realistic role and responsibility that they could be expected to undertake in providing first aid as a supportive citizen.
Aim: The course will introduce the pupil to their role and responsibilities at an Intermediate level and include personal safety, seeking adult assistance, calling the emergency services, giving basic treatment, content of first aid kite and recording accidents.
Objective: At the end of the course pupils will be able to take positive action by considering their personal safety, seeking adult help, calling the emergency services, giving basic treatment, content of first aid boxes and recording accidents.
Course content-
Being a good citizen in sport, at home and in your community
Assessing and considering personal safety and the environment
Providing casualty care.
ADTT principles and practices, seeking adult assistance
Recognition and priorities of treatment ( 4 B's)
Phoning the Ambulance service
CPR for adults and children
Choking procedures for adults and children
Managing the unconscious casualty
Wounds and Bleeding, bandaging
Treatment of Fractures and Dislocations
Recognition and treatment of certain medical conditions
Recording of accidents
Course duration: 6 hours
HIGHER LEVEL - KEY STAGE 4 (14 - 16 Years of age)
This is aimed at young persons within Key Stage 4 of their educational development. The syllabus of knowledge and skills reflects the age and ability of the young person and the realistic role and responsibility that they could be expected to undertake in providing first aid as a supportive citizen.
Aim: The course will introduce the pupil to their role and responsibilities at a Higher level and include the priorities and treatment of Adults, Children and Infants across a diverse range of first aid circumstances.
Objective: At the end of the course pupils will be able to take positive action by considering their personal safety, seeking assistance from others, calling the emergency services, applying appropriate treatment to Adult, Child and Infant casualties, content of first aid boxes and recording accidents
